Safe to swim?

Summer in Upper Hutt is often long and warm, with less rain and dry winds. We usually experience higher than normal water usage, which adds pressure to the water supply and can contribute to low water levels.

With higher temperatures and lower water levels, cyanobacteria can form extensive blooms which can be toxic, particularly to dogs if they eat the algae mats.

Greater Wellington Regional Council are responsible for monitoring toxic algae in our rivers, maintaining maps that show current toxic algae warning levels for many popular swimming holes and waterways.
