How does our water network work?

Council is committed to providing cost effective, high quality and reliable water supply to the residents of Upper Hutt, as well as working with our community to reduce the volume of water that is used.

Our water comes from three sources; the Hutt River, the combined flow of the Wainuiomata and Orongorongo rivers, and the Waiwhetu Aquifer–a natural underground reservoir that’s fed by river-water filtered through the ground.

In the Wellington region, our water network is managed by Wellington WaterWellington Water is a company owned by the Upper Hutt, Lower Hutt, Porirua, and Wellington City Councils, and Greater Wellington Regional Council. We are all equal shareholders.

They look after the drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater services for our region. This includes managing any maintenance, repairs, and improvements required across the three water networks.

Regional Standard for Water Services

The Regional Standard for Water Services is a collaborative effort between Wellington Water and the Wellington, Upper Hutt, Porirua, and Hutt City Councils.

The regional standard brings together engineering standards for stormwater, wastewater and water supply infrastructure in the four cities.

The standard is intended for use with new infrastructure in subdivisions and for replacements in existing areas. It aims to ensure all work done on water networks complies with the Council’s objectives and performance criteria for the network. It should be read in combination with the Council’s existing development codes.
