Alcohol licensing

If you are selling and supplying alcohol to the public in Upper Hutt, you will need an alcohol licence. You will also need to be familiar with the laws and regulations under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012.

Licence type

There are different types of alcohol licences you can apply for depending on your circumstances.  To find out which one is right for you, go here.

Public notifications

Once we have checked both the public notification forms as supplied by you with your application, you are required to:

  1. Notify the Post – and advertise in two separate issues.
  2. Put the public notification form up in the front window of your premise.

Payment and processing

Fees vary.  You can check which fees apply to you here.

Once we have received your application, we will invoice you the appropriate fee.

When your payment has been received, your application will be processed.

Once we have checked both of the public notification forms (supplied by you with your application), you are required to notify the Post and put the public notification form up in the window of your premises.

A report is then obtained from Council’s Licensing Inspector, the Police and the Regional Public Health.

All new licences are issued for one year. It is the responsibility of the applicant to apply for a renewal before the expiry date. We cannot issue a renewal for an expired licence. If your licence is expired, you will need to apply for a new licence.

Renewals are issued for three years.

How to apply

To apply, applicants should visit the ‘Do it online’ page on our website.  Click on the ‘Alcohol, food, and health business’ tile where you’ll be taken to first login to or set up and online account before progressing with the application.

Please note that Council staff cannot view any applications which have not yet been ‘submitted’.
