Following last month’s slip, Maoribank Boardwalk Track will remain closed while options to remedy or remove the path are explored.

The affected section of track, which is on private property, not council land, was visited by Council staff last week.

It was determined that more slips are likely, and the track remains unsafe for public use.

“Council staff who visited the site found exposed silt and boulders on the track,” says Group Manager Community Services Mike Ryan.

“We understand the closure of the track is inconvenient, especially as the weather starts to warm up, but there have been a number of landslides in the area in recent years and public safety is our top priority.”

Council received an engineer’s report earlier this month and options to reestablish or remove the path are now being explored.

“Work to ensure the path is safe will likely be complicated and costly,” says Ryan.

“Until a full assessment is completed, and an agreement with the landowner has been made, the path will remain closed.”

A barrier has been installed and Council is urging members of the public to avoid the area.
