The role

The purpose of the Principal Advisor Emergency Management role is to ensure that the Council has robust emergency management capability, processes and systems in place to support a safe, healthy community and environment.

A key requirement of this position will be the ability and willingness to collaborate with a wide range of people across a range of emergency management related areas and activities at all levels, from strategic planning to practical operations.

The Emergency Management Lead will be a champion within the organization for all things Civil Defence and Emergency Management (CDEM) related. This primarily includes ensuring 24/7 capability to identify and respond to any emergency event through our Emergency Operations Centre (EOC).

Key responsibilities include:

  • Strategic programme delivery
  • Operational planning and readiness
  • Response planning
  • Community Resilience, Engagement and Reduction

Key skills we are looking for include:

  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and remain calm, decisive and positive during emergencies
  • Effective relationship management skills with the ability to build and maintain effective professional relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, both internally and externally and at multiple levels.
  • Work programme and/or project management and planning skills.
  • Experience in reviewing and developing policies and strategies.
  • Demonstrated experience working in the emergency management sector in a strategic and operational capacity (desirable)
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation in particular the Civil Defence Emergency Management Act (desirable)
