Sport and recreation

Upper Hutt has a large open space network, with a variety of spaces for the many recreation activities enjoyed by our community. Our parks and open spaces provide opportunities for a wide range of users to be active, socialise and relax. The diverse character of these spaces contributes to what makes our city unique and distinctive, attracts people to live in Upper Hutt and underpins our city vision. The Open Space Strategy is the overarching, long-term planning document that will help Council manage, plan and develop parks, reserves and open spaces for the current and future needs of our community.

Healthy and active lifestyles play a critical role in individual and community wellbeing and our Activation team facilitates a wide range of programmes and events for the community, including the annual Breakaway Festival of Cycling, Youth in Park events, Buggy Walks, Parks and Places and other community initiatives and workshops. Check out our events listings for more ways to get involved in your community.
